In the beginning, before God created man He created pure spirits - we call them angels. These creatures are so powerful, so awesome, that every time they come to man in a biblical reading man is terrified. Like us, these creatures have free will, freedom of choice.
Catholic tradition holds that Lucifer, the angel of light, rejected God's plan for man. Lucifer in his pride would not humble himself to serve this God-man, Jesus. A great battle of wills and loyalty ensued among the angels and they chose sides. Lucifer became Satan, the father of lies and pride determined to thwart God's plan for man.
Could it be this former "angel of light" knows how to convince us as he convinced a third of the angels that God has a bad plan for us?
Could it be that we have been deceived and what we celebrate as good (pride as a virtue) could actually be separating us from the great plan for our life both now and eternally?
Excerpts from "Sons of Light" by Mother M. Angelica is worth reading and considering this root of pride. https://www.ewtn.com/library/mother/ma45e.htm
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
